Being the great-grandson of the legendary Abraham Izak Perold who not only created the Pinotage grape variety but also brought 177 grape varieties to South Africa and his experiments and lectures in sustainable agricultural techniques are still used to this day. ABOUT Perold & Co
Gerhard Perold has a passion for sharing South African wine, as well as stories and the culture that are so closely tied to the people and wine. He does this through events at The Mendip Pantry, by importing wine through Perold & Co and general retail through Gerhard’s online shop for Perold Wine Cellar.
Gerhard’s heritage is closely tied to South African wine and agriculture through his great-grandfather, Abraham Izak Perold who was the first head of Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosh. He also created the Pinotage grape, brought 177 grape varieties into South Africa and experimented extensively with better and more sustainable agriculture and viticulture.
